The annual Coolbawn Ambush Commemoration took place in Castlecomer on Saturday June 18, exactly 90 years since that fateful day. The event was organised by North Kilkenny Sinn Féin and drew a large, enthusiastic, crowd to the town despite the inclement weather.

Freebooters Annual U10 Mini World Cup for the Tommy Hayes Memorial Trophy was held in Scanlon Park over the weekend. Thomastown Utd were the overall winners of the tournament for the second year in a row. Thomastown beat the surprise team of the tournament, Freebooters’ u9s, 2-0 in the final to retain the trophy.

In truth it was not the most memorable contest as Kilkenny got the job done easing to an unconvincing victory over a very weak Dublin challenge at a rain and windswept Thomastown last Saturday afternoon. Severe showers preceded the game but thankfully the rain stayed away throughout. Kilkenny, playing into a strong first-half breeze, made a whirlwind blitzing start, and Dublin appeared to have a long afternoon ahead of them as Kilkenny led 2-0 to 0-1 after just six minutes.

Ireland’s top young hurlers, camogie players, and handball competitors will be in Galway this weekend for the prestigious Feile na nGael u-14 tournament.
