Gerald’s looking provincial crown

Tomorrow afternoon in Ballina the latest crop of St Gerald’s College, Castlebar, footballers will attempt to claim another Connacht senior title for the school. Last year saw the school claim the last ‘colleges’ only crown, before the separate colleges and vocational schools championships were blended together into one.

Athlone’s Literary Festival which has grown from strength to strength in recent years, has announced its 2011 line-up. It features diverse events such as an evening with former Mountjoy Governor John Lonergan and discussions with poet Gabriel Rosenstock and writer Nuala Ni Conchuir, and an interview with Ruth Dudley Edwards. The event literally has something for everyone, whether it’s crime fiction, comic strips, poetry, music, or true-life stories. The festival takes place October 7- 9.

CARI Rock Ball will be crackers

In association with Finbar Hoban Presents, three bands again will again provide the finest of music while helping to raise funds for CARI (Children At Risk In Ireland). Hosted by Karen Conway, Saturday October 3 at 9pm sees Mulroy's Bar Ritz as the venue for Castlebar's third Charity Rock Ball with Castlebar's Hot Rock, Mother Black Cap, and Galway's 21 Outs. Also on the night there will be a Guitar Hero Challenge and the second CARI Cream Cracker Charity Challenge. The current world record is three crackers (without liquid) in 14.45 seconds and the challengers are attempting to match this record while also seeing how many crackers they can eat in a minute.
