In many tourist towns both home and away, you will notice that there always seems to be a street full of tacky souvenir shops, a smattering of dull cafes, and some terrible tourist-trap restaurants. Not so in Galway. We are lucky enough to have Quay Street, the buzzing heart of Galway’s Latin Quarter. It has medieval architecture, a pedestrian street for browsing the many quirky little shops full of wooden toys, vintage clothes, and pottery alongside the quality woollens and Celtic jewellery. The atmosphere in the pubs is fun and friendly, with the sound of music from trad to rock spilling onto the street. There are almost always some buskers and performers, a festival or parade, and this is the best place in Galway city on a sunny evening, when the outdoor seating is packed with tourists and locals engaged in 'people watching' and enjoying all the sights and sounds of the streets of Galway.

When the late and much loved Gerry Galvin and his wife Marie opened Drimcong restaurant near Moycullen in the 1980s, Gerry came with the glowing accolade as one of Ireland's leading chefs.

Open over a year now and a firm favourite with many a Galwegian, Rouge is the hottest ticket in town at the moment, and understandably so. The €15 for two courses price tag alone would be enough to get people in the door, but the fact that the food is fantastic has something to do with it as well. A small menu is usually a promise of good things to come in my eyes, a few things done right is far better than a long list of potential disappointments and Rouge has the shortest and sweetest menu of them all. I went at the weekend with some old ex-Galway friends (who must now regret leaving!) and we had a very lovely evening there.

Here in the middle of the summer that did not happen, it may seem promises do not count for anything any more. Garden trampoline accidents have now been replaced in the A&E by advanced cases of pneumonia and chronic trenchfoot as the leading summer time ailments (I made that up, but it could be true, couldn’t it?). So if a newly opened restaurant promises “quality steak, seafood, wine, cocktails — and so much more” should we believe it?

This week sees the launch of the Cellar Bar and Restaurant’s new food menu, adding even more variety to the extensive range already available at this busy city centre venue.

The Spanish Arch Bar and Live Venue may have undergone substantial changes in recent years, but all of them appear to have endeared it further to locals and visitors alike. Located in Galway’s Latin Quarter, its wide range of quality food and constant line up of live music have affirmed its status as one of Quay Street’s most renowned establishments.

Along with its nearby neighbour, Moran’s of the Weir, I reckon Paddy Burke’s must be one of the best known landmark pubs in the country. I pass by the front door most days and there are always cars turning in to park, especially tourists who have heard the name or have been there previously. For myself it is the place of one of my earliest culinary memories. During the mid to late 1970s I was a regular diner there, that was when bar food had just moved from ‘hang sandwiches’ to toasted sandwiches (really posh) and to hot food. My absolute favourite dish back then was chicken cordon bleu and it was the most popular dish on their menu for many years. The luxury of it, breaded on the outside, ham on the inside, and a cheesy sauce oozed out as soon as it was cut. I am sure many readers will remember this dish too.

Sofia’s Restaurant, Left Bank Mall, is wheat, dairy, and sugar free. All meat and fish are organic or wild, with the most popular dishes including beef Thai salad, homemade sushi, wild seawater monkfish wrap, Sophia’s 100 per cent organic steak sandwich, and tandoori chicken salad. The restaurant is run by Dr Eric Dilworth, GP, and Imelda Geraghty of Circle of Life.
