The town was known as a ‘showneen town’, that is a town with a close allegiance to the British way of doing things. This was mainly because of the status of having a major army barracks on its doorstep. The army was an important purchaser of supplies from the town merchants; and many local people were soldiers, or had husbands or boyfriends who were in the army.

St Mary’s College was opened by Bishop O’Dea on August 25 1912. Its purpose was to serve the educational needs of Galway and of the diocese. Generous scholarships were provided to this end.

St Mary’s Church and graveyard are to be bought by the local authorities in Kilkenny from the Church of Ireland in what is seen to be an important move for the conservation of heritage in the Marble City.
