Claremorris sports coaches join Mayo Goal to Work network

A group of jobseekers mainly from the Claremorris area have just completed a 10 week specialised sports coaching course which is hoped will provide them with the tools to coach in the local community, or gain some part time employment. The Goal to Work Sports Coach Training Programme, which ran for three days each week in Claremorris GAA Centre and Claremorris Family Resource Centre, allowed trainees to become qualified GAA, soccer, rugby, and athletics coaches, with additional sports modules in child protection, first aid, disability awareness, and walking leadership completed.

Ring announces funding for Trailhead development and extension of Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail

Michael Ring T.D., Minister of State for Regional Economic Development at the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs yesterday (Thursday) announced the provision of funding of €34,600 for the enhancement of the Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail over two projects.

Age Action needs you to keep the lights on in Mayo

Age Action has launched a new fundraising campaign to support its 'Care and Repair' service for older people, which last year carried out more than 1,300 jobs in Mayo. Justin Moran, head of advocacy and communications at Age Action, said: “Our Care and Repair service carries out tens of thousands of DIY jobs in the home for older people around Ireland every year. Our volunteers help with the small jobs around the house that, as people get older, they might struggle to do. This can be as simple as changing a light-bulb, installing a lock, clearing a drain or tacking down a loose floorboard, but we urgently need your help to keep this service going.”

MIA merges with SWMDC

Mayo Intercultural Action (MIA) has announced that it has merged with South West Mayo Development Company (SWMDC) from the start of October. This voluntary transfer was initiated by the MIA board of directors and advisory committee and facilitated by the SWMDC board and management.

New route map for the Reek launched

Following the formation of the Croagh Patrick stakeholders group late last year which includes all the mountains stakeholders such as the church, Murrisk community, Mayo County Council, South West Mayo Development Company, Mayo Mountain Rescue, Croagh Patrick Archaeological Society, and the tourism and adventure sectors, the group has launched a a new map/information leaflet and signage for Croagh Patrick. The map is the first time that the route is clearly marked out on one ordnance survey sheet and will greatly assist users in navigating the route.

Leader local development strategy submitted

The Mayo Local Community Development Committee Local Action Group (LCDC- LAG) has submitted a Local Development Strategy to the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government (DECLG) for the delivery of the LEADER Programme in County Mayo for the next five years.

Community input sought for Local Development Strategy

Planning is now underway for the LEADER element of the Rural Development Programme (RDP) 2014-2020. It is expected that by January 2016, the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government will decide on who will deliver the new LEADER programme in Mayo.
