For the sixth year in a row the Galway hurlers have been knocked out of the All-Ireland senior hurling championship before the Galway Races. And last Sunday’s 10-point defeat to Waterford was a real kick in the guts for hurling supporters in the county, particularly those who travelled to Semple Stadium with high hopes.

After impressive victories over Clare and Cork in the last two rounds of the championship the Galway hurlers must take the next step this Sunday in Thurles (4pm) and put Waterford to the sword in the All-Ireland quarter-final.

For Galway that means defeating Waterford in next Sunday’s All-Ireland quarter final at Semple Stadium and reaching the All-Ireland semi-finals for the first time since 2005.

The improving Galway hurlers will face defeated Munster finalists Waterford on Sunday week at Semple Stadium at 4pm in the All-Ireland quarter final as a result of their impressive victory last Saturday over a shell shocked Cork outfit.

Kilkenny yet to beat Dublin

In recent years Semple Stadium has become the spiritual home for the National Hurling League Final. Geographically it probably suited all participating counties.
