The Neale bask in their first taste of glory

I was in the Neale last Sunday morning for an u15 semi-final and there, taking pride of place, was the Pete Mc Donnell junior cup sitting on top of the gated entrance to the field. There were many gravelly, tired sounding, voices in the small compact stand, which is very understandable considering this was their first and only adult title of their 110 year history and no doubt a long night of celebrations had taken place.

Sammon must make some tough calls

Picking most teams at any level is a difficult exercise, unless of course you have absolute stand-out players like Ja Fallon, Padraic Joyce, Sean Og De Paor, Tomas Mannion, Michael Donnellan, Derek Savage and company, in their prime. Then it is just a matter of handing out the jerseys and letting the talented guys show the world how they have been blessed by God and mother-nature.

SPORTS SHORTS

•The popular Galway Schools Soccer and Gaelic Football Academy returns to St Mary’s College this month. Two camps, from July 13 to July 17 and July 20 to July 24 will be held from 9am to 1pm daily. Directed by Sean Og de Paor, Martin Horgan, and Robert Grealish, this successful mix of sports has been a resounding success over the past decade. Quality coaching, fine facilities, and prizes for all participants - not forgetting the daily soup and roll for each child - are the hallmarks of the St Mary’s academy. A third camp starts next Monday (June 5 to 10) which is based in Oranmore. For further enquiries contact 087-6061176/ 087- 2237683/091-388973.
