Castlebar Town Council has given its backing to fund a book on the history of the council that is being compiled by former councillor Noel Campbell. At the March meeting of the council Mr Campbell gave the members a brief presentation on the research work he has carried out so far, which will go back as far as 1750. Campbell’s presentation gave the background to the town getting its first charter and the different types of local government that were in operation over the past 400 years in the town, and how it was used for different purposes by those in power at different times.

The residents of a housing estate in Castlebar have been left in limbo following the withdrawal of the services of an agent who had been acting on behalf of the management company for the upkeep and maintenance of the estate.

Members of the public can expect to pay a bit less for parking in Castlebar in the coming weeks with the adoption of new parking bye-laws in the town by the town council this week. The new bye-laws will see monthly parking permits for the new Pavilion Road car park and the Spencer Street car park available to the public for €10 a month. Parking in both those car parks can also be paid for at a daily rate of €2.

Mayo County Council has not taken any action similar to that of Wicklow County Council where individual homeowners have been pressed for the payment of unpaid development levies by developers, but it is “watching this space”, the February meeting of the Castlebar Electoral Area was told.

A number of Castlebar councillors have called on the NRA to put in a number of right hand turning junctions on the N5 between Castlebar and Turlough. Cllr Michael Kilcoyne raised the issue through a notice of motion, looking for traffic calming measures to be put in place at the turn into the Abbeybreaffy nursing home for those travelling from Castlebar. Cllr Kilcoyne told the meeting, “I’m not looking for the road to be widened, it’s wide enough as it is. All it will cost is the gallon of paint to put the markings down on the road.” His motion received universal support from the other members, with Cllr Henry Kenny asking that consideration also be given to something similar to the turn into the Church of Ireland church in Turlough a few miles further out the road.

Those who take advantage of purchasing a long stay parking disc for the two major town centre car parks in Castlebar, will potentially see their cost of parking increase in the near future.

In what could possibly be their final budget the members of Castlebar Town Council voted to reduce the commercial rate by one per cent for the coming year. The members held their annual budget meeting on Tuesday afternoon and following a two hour debate they were able to agree the budget for 2013. The commercial new rate for the town will now be 70.23 in the euro, down from 70.94 last year.

The three town councils in Mayo faced into what will possibly be their last budgets over the past two weeks. However at both the Castlebar Town Council and Ballina Town Council budget meetings the issue of starting the review of the towns’ development plans and the costs associated with them has caused a lot of debate this week.

Controversial Castlebar councillor Frank Durcan once again called the planning process in Mayo corrupt, at the September meeting of the Castlebar Electoral Area Committee.
