Metropolitans stand in Mayo’s way

It has taken a little over 210 minutes of championship football to get here. Leitrim, Sligo and Down all stood in the way, but were not up to the challenge. On Sunday things get very real, but this is what Mayo have been preparing for ever since the final whistle blew in the same venue in last year’s All Ireland semi-final against Kerry. They are back to where they want to be, their fourth championship game in a five game series they hope will end in victory and a place in the All Ireland final for the first time in six years and another crack at bringing Sam Maguire back to Mayo. But that is another battle to be fought at a later date, and all that will be on Mayo minds on Sunday is the game ahead of them.

The late Garda Robert McCallion will be fondly remembered by family, friends and colleagues on Sunday May 6 when Swinford GAA club host a challenge match between Mayo and Donegal to mark the rededication of their all-weather pitch. Robbie lost his fight for life on April 7, 2009 from injuries received while on duty as a garda in Letterkenny. “He was a proud and very active member of Swinford GAA club and the community feel that this dedication is a fitting tribute to him,” said Mayo GAA PRO and Swinford club member, Aiden McLoughlin.

•Three fighters from the Point Blank Gym in Parkmore faced off against their counterparts from the Top Pro Kilkenny Club for the Tribal Warfare Shield. Benjamin "Son of Life" Davis showed his speed when he knocked out Ger Coady with a lightening fast left straight, sending the ex-kickboxer to the canvas. Tom "The Catastrophe" Kelly had a war with Mick Timmins until early in the second round Kelly pounded Timmins until the referee stepped in, while Kevin Moran was able to get a dominant position and a technical knock out over Ray Dowd to make it a triple victory for the home fighters. Other Galwaymen on the card included Dave King who held off the early onslought of Swedish fighter Johan Vedenius to take a win in the second round by disqualification when the giant Swede inadvertantly broke the rules. Those who thought that the lifting of Sam Maguire was the signal to finally put away the county colours for another year would be very much mistaken. With the launch of the National Rehab/Powers Whiskey Pub Quiz in association with the Vintners Federation of Ireland, there is still one more chance for Mayo to be crowned All-Ireland champions and you can even be a part of the glory.

Corofin want to succeed in Connacht

Last gasp defeats can have a shuddering impact on a club. Back in November, 2006 at Dr Hyde Park, Corofin were on the verge of annexing Connacht title number five. Victory was within the Galway team's grasp, they had absorbed punishment from St Brigid’s, but Corofin were still standing. So when the knock out blow arrived three minutes into stoppage time the devastation was palpable. The languid Karol Mannion lashed as sweet a shot as he will ever drill, rippling the net to fracture Corofin hearts. They still haven’t been fully mended, but the restoration process has been assisted by Corofin’s Galway SFC success.
