An Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced the details of the €11 million overhaul of the Sacred Heart Hospital when he visited the hospital on Monday. The roll out of the investment into the hospital will quell fears that the hospital was being wound down. The design team for the project will be appointed this spring, with the tender process completed early next year, and it is planned the sod will be turned on the project by early summer 2015 and should be completed by late 2016 or early 2017. It was also confirmed that while the construction gets under way the hospital will remain open and accepting patients under its care.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny has unveiled a memorial plaque on the site of the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar in memory of the people who lived and now rest on the site of the hospital. The dedicated plaque has been erected in honour of the people who were laid to rest on the site from the time of the Famine up to as recently as the 1950s.

The Taoiseach stated this week: “I haven’t seen any report in respect of the Sacred Heart Hospital yet but what I understand is the Sacred Heart Hospital and before that the County Home in their own way and in their own time did magnificent work in respect of the provision of facilities for the people. And the staff who worked there over the years, the many staff, some long since gone, gave the best, but times have changed.”
