NUI Galway study finds sea lettuce can play a key role in Irish coastal ecosystems

Researchers at NUI Galway’s Ryan Institute and School of Natural Sciences have carried out a study aimed at identifying strains of seaweed which are good for aquaculture and agriculture in Ireland. The study discovered that sea lettuce, a fast growing seaweed with excellent nutritional value for animal feed and industrial uses, could return higher yields when the right strains are used. This seaweed is also responsible for green tides in Cork and Dublin.

NUI Galway has been named 'University of the Year 2018' in the Sunday Times University Guide, securing the prestigious accolade for a third time, having won the inaugural title in 2002 and again in 2009.

New rankings place NUI Galway in top one per cent of universities in the world

NUI Galway has climbed six places in the QS World University Ranking 2017/2018, to reach 243 in the world. This is the fifth successive year the University has risen in the international rankings, consolidating its position among the world’s elite educational institutions. It now ranks amongst the top one per cent of universities in the world.
