Local councillors have welcomed funding of over €1.6 million which has been allocated to Westmeath County Council towards private house grants for older people and people with a disability.

Following months of discussion, culminating in an intense two-hour debate at Monday’s meeting, local councillors voted this week to discontinue Westmeath County Council’s involvement in waste collection services in the county.

Funding of €250,000 has been anounced for disadvantaged areas in Mullingar, just two weeks after the town was ear-marked for inclusion in the RAPID programme.

Despite getting a very prudent budget drafted and adopted, it was the state of rural roads that got the councillors in a flurry in the council chamber at the Budget meeting just before Christmas.
