Flood risk group failed to meet for four-year period

Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy has expressed his concern after a Strategic Planning for Flood Risk Management report revealed that a steering group established to oversee a national programme for flood risk assessment did not meet during a four-year period before November 2014.

Hospital asks for only genuine emergencies to use the service

Mayo University Hospital has asked that only those with genuine emergencies use the hospital today, in a statement from the Hospital this afternoon they said, "The Emergency Department at Mayo University Hospital is extremely busy at present with a high number of medical attendances. Every effort is being made to provide beds for those patients awaiting admission.

OPW to host public consultation on Ballina flooding

The people of Ballina will get their chance to engage with the Office of Public Works when they host a public consultation day next month in Ballina in relation to a draft flood risk map for the town. The consultation day will take place on Tuesday November 11 at the civic offices in Ballina, where members of the public can meet with officials from the OPW and experts from the specialist consultant, JBA Consulting, who will also be in attendance.

Mayo companies pick up All Ireland Occupational Safety Awards

A number of Mayo companies picked up awards at the All Ireland Occupational Safety Awards in Mullingar recently. Mairead McGuinness, Fine Gael MEP and vice president of the European Parliament, presented the awards. She said the awards mark the achievement of people who day-to-day carry out what are in many ways mundane tasks in detecting risks, training personnel, enforcing and monitoring good practices, and inculcating rather than dictating a safety ethos in the workplace.

Galway construction works are urged to heed new safety campaign

A new health and safety campaign aimed at increasing ‘Safety at Heights’ is being rolled out on construction sites throughout Galway. Falls from heights were responsible for 24 of the 42 construction related deaths that occurred in the last five years (57 per cent of all construction fatalities) and a disproportionate number of these accidents have happened on small sites and maintenance type jobs.

Employers urged to be extra vigilant with young workers on summer jobs

With the summer holidays now underway, for thousands of students around the country, the Health and Safety Authority has this week urged employers to be extra vigilant when it comes to taking on young workers for the summer.
