From skullduggery to a fishing industry

We know very little about manmade piers and quays along the western seaboard before the beginning of the 19th century, when a lavish programme of safe harbours were built not only to encourage fishing, but as relief programmes in times of distress. It was also an attempt to replace the activities of piracy and smuggling with an industry based on the believed bounty from the sea.

The living memory of a young Oranmore woman who died after contracting meningitis eight years ago will be enhanced this Sunday (June 18) when the fifth of five wishes pledged in her honour will be furthered by a Midsummer Walk in the Park (Rinville Park) to raise funds for Sadhbh’s Wish No. 5 which is supporting COPE Galway.

The Athy family are of great antiquity in Galway. They were originally Anglo-Norman, but on coming here, they quickly became one of the original Tribes. Their estates were mainly in the Oranmore area, they owned the Rinville Estate. They are credited with being the first family to erect a stone building in the city in the 13th century. Castles associated with the family through the years are Ballylee, Carrigín, Glinsk, Castletown, Rinville, Claregalway, Ardmullivan, De Bermingham’s, Aughnanure, and Castledaly.
