Just like the charity’s lifeboats, the RNLI’s fundraising team need a dedicated volunteer crew, volunteers being at the heart of the RNLI and comprising 95% of its people.

The year just ended was a significant one for Lough Ree RNLI both on and off the water, 2022 witnessing the opening of the charity’s ‘state of the art’ lifeboat station, while on the water the volunteer crew responded to 47 call outs during the year.

On Saturday, August 13, Lough Ree RNLI was tasked by the Irish Coast Guard to assist 10 people on board a speedboat in danger of sinking on the River Shannon near the M6 Bridge in Athlone.

On Monday morning of this week Lough Ree RNLI was requested by the Coast Guard to go to the assistance of four people on board a stranded cruiser near Clonminch Island on the lake, bringing to 19 the number of people assisted in six incidents this week.

Despite a quiet start to the year on Midland waters, because of pandemic related issues, Lough Ree RNLI volunteer crews responded to a call for assistance over the weekend (Saturday, July 9) which brought the total ‘call-outs’ for the year to 20.

Saturday, June 25, marked International Day of the Seafarer and was an apt date to mark the official opening of IWAI Dunrovin headquarters (HQ Dunrovin) at Coosan Point on the shores of Lough Ree.
