The RNLI’s 44th lifeboat station in Ireland has officially been put into service and become a declared search and rescue asset on Lough Ree. The new lifeboat station is based at Coosan Point in Athlone. The RNLI will operate a B class Atlantic 75 lifeboat from temporary station facilities with the cost of the set-up estimated to be around €150,000.

Mayo RNLI lifeboats launched twenty five times in 2011; seventeen people assisted

Last year saw RNLI lifeboats in Ireland launch 980 times to a variety of callouts. More than 900 people were rescued over the course of the year by volunteer lifeboat crews who spent 9,826 hours on service at sea. In Mayo, the RNLI in Achill launched 14 times during 2011 and assisted eight people. In Ballyglass, six all weather lifeboats were launched, five inshore, and a total of nine people were assisted.

RNLI gives go-ahead for lifeboat trial on Lough Ree

The RNLI is to trial an inshore lifeboat on one of the biggest loughs on the River Shannon. At a recent meeting of the RNLI Board of Trustees the decision was taken to place an inshore lifeboat on Lough Ree for at least 12 months to assess whether a permanent lifeboat station should be established.

Twenty two rescues by Mayo lifeboats last year

The RNLI lifeboats in Mayo rescued 22 people off the coast of the county last year. The lifeboats, which are based in stations in Achill and Ballyglass, were called into action on 18 different occasions in 2010. The Ballyglass lifeboat was by far the busier of the two, with 12 launches of the boat. Ten of the launches were of the all-weather lifeboat, while the inshore lifeboat had to be launched twice. The Ballyglass station rescued 21 people over the 12 months.
