For the past 13 years, members of the Grady family in Murrisk have been donating proceeds from the sales of soft drinks and food on the summit of Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday to local charities.

A fundraising event — a sponsored cycle and optional climb— in aid of the Swinford Variety Group will take place on October 8.

Up to 80 people will climb Croagh Patrick on the morning of August 13 in order to raise funds for Cancer Care West and the Galway Hospice. The group from Galway are doing it in memory of Susie Downey Grealy (38) who passed away from cancer at the beginning of the year.

The annual Reek Sunday pilgrimage will take place this weekend on Ireland’s holy mountain Croagh Patrick. This pilgrimage has been carried out uninterrupted for more than 1,500 years. Croagh Patrick has some 100,000 visitors annually with up to 20,000 people expected this weekend.

“Whatever you do, take your time and stay safe,” advised Colm Byrne, team leader of Mayo Mountain Rescue, when asked about giving advice to people climbing Croagh Patrick on Sunday next, Reek Sunday.

Over the upcoming August Bank Holiday weekend, the Bailieborough branch of the Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association will hold their annual fundraising event. This year the event involves a mammoth cycle of 420km, starting out in Bailieborough, Co Cavan, cycling to Westport, then climbing Croagh Patrick, before cycling back to Cavan.
