Mayo County Council, in partnership with Social Innovation Fund Ireland, is hosting an information seminar for local social enterprises to learn more about how they can apply for funding from the new €1.6 million Social Enterprise Development Fund.

Mayo County Council’s budget meeting was adjourned for a week this morning to allow for the councillors more time to consider the draft budget put before them. Fianna Fail whip - Cllr Damien Ryan proposed the adjournment of the meeting for a week, which was supported by all the other groupings in the chamber. Cllr Ryan proposed that following the initial introductary presentations by the council chief executive, Peter Hynes and the director of finance, Peter Duggan the meeting would adjourn for seven days.

Mayo Sports Partnership this week launched its new Strategy and Action Plan 2017-2021, the launch took place in Ballinrobe Golf Club and was carried out by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring, and Caitheoirleach of Mayo County Council Cllr Richard Finn. Following the successful delivery of its previous two plans 2006 – 2010 and 2010 – 2014 the partnership plans to further deliver on its commitment to the people of Mayo, greater participation in recreational sport by all.

The future of the old Volex plant raised its head again at the November meeting of Mayo County Council, where independent councillors Michael Kilcoyne and Gerry Ginty called for an update on the ownership situation of the plant following the falling through of a proposed development to take place there.

Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring, confirmed last Friday that the Hughes family has now successfully completed the acquisition of Westport House and estate from the Browne family. In February 2016, the family placed the historic house and estate on the market, having owned it for generations. EirGrid, Ireland’s electricity grid operator, last Friday announced plans to replace the Grid West electricity transmission project with a smaller-scale development. The Grid West project was proposed in 2012 to connect large amounts of renewable energy to the grid. The decision to replace it was made due to the lower than expected amounts of wind generation in the north Connacht region.

Despite a stark warning from Peter Duggan, Head of Finance of Mayo County Council that the local authority is going to face a €5.1 million shortfall next year, the elected members of the council refused to increase the base rate of the Local Property Tax for next year.

A Fianna Fáil councillor was told he should leave the comedy to Brendan Grace by another councillor this week after he was accused of making a sexist comment in the chamber. Castlebar Municipal District Councillor Martin McLoughlin, who was co-opted on to the council to replaced Dep Lisa Chambers after she was elected to the Dáil, while paying tribute to outgoing Cathaoirleach Cllr Al McDonnell said that "your speeches reminded me of the mini-skirt of the '70's. Your speaches were short enough to be interesting and long enough to cover the essentials."

The process of putting a master plan in place for the strategic development zone (SDZ) at Ireland West Airport Knock (IWAK) will take in the region of two years to complete, the elected members of Mayo County Council were told this week at their June monthly meeting which was held in Carancon Parish Centre. At the meeting the members voted to defer the making of a new local area plan for the airport following the announcement a fortnight ago of the SDZ designation being approved by the Cabinet.
