Tomás Bán Concannon was born on Inis Meáin 150 years ago on November 16, 1870, the son of Páidin Concannon and Annie Faherty. He was called ‘bán’ because of his blond hair and to differentiate him from other neighbours of the same name. He was educated on the island and, unusually for an islander, in the Monastery School in Galway. When he was 15 his brother brought him to America where he went to a number of colleges and attended Eastman College in New York where he graduated with an MA in accountancy. He spent some time working in a business selling rubber stamps, then in his brother’s vineyard in California, and he later set up a business in Mexico. It was there he came across a journal called Gaodhal published by Conradh na Gaeilge in the US. So he learned to read and write in Irish in Mexico.

NUI Galway’s Arts in Action 2016 Grand Finale will take place at the upper Aula Maxima on campus on Thursday, March 24 at 7pm. This event, which is entitled ‘War, Freedom, Love and Loss’, is a collaboration between the University’s discipline of English, School of Medicine, and the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance.

Just a few weeks after the Irish Volunteers were formed in Dublin, a meeting was set up in the Town Hall on December 12th, 1913 to establish a Volunteer force in Galway. There was a lot of excitement and expectation as Eoin McNeill, Roger Casement and Pádraic Pearse told the packed hall that their main objective was to win Home Rule but the movement was also formed to protect them from the Ulster Volunteers. The meeting, which was chaired by George Nicholls, was a major success and some 600 men joined up that evening.

MORE THAN 40 medical students in NUI Galway will perform music and song from the first 20 years of the 20th century in a concert entitled War, Freedom, Love and Loss, in the Aula Maxima, on campus, on Thursday March 24 at 7pm.
