More than €12k paid in expenses for councillors to attend two events

A total of €12,228.26 was paid in expenses by Mayo County Council to elected members to attend just two events last year. When it came to expenses for conferences, training and meetings in Ireland, a total of €72,438.85 was paid out to the members for 2016 who, according to the figures released, attended 201 conferences and training events between them, working out at an average of €360 per claim.

McNamara wants to know status of Keem Bay Discovery Point project

Achill based Fianna Fáil councillor Paul McNamara has asked for a progress report on the proposed Signature Discovery Point that was announced for Keem Bay in Achill almost two years ago. Keem Bay was selected as one of a number of Signature Discovery Points along the Wild Atlantic Way and it was proposed that a glass viewing platform overhanging the Atlantic Ocean near the old Coastguard station would be constructed.

Achill based Cllr Paul McNamara said this week, that's he's afraid that Achill is in danger of losing some of it's Blue Flag beaches in future because of the lack of services such as toilets and bins at some of the beaches.

Planning restrictions that are being enforced will "close down rural Ireland" it was alleged this week. At the April meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District, the councillors were informed that a planning application for a house in Achill was up for refusal as it did not meet the guidelines laid down in the county development plan. The councillors were told that the house would impinge on the scenic nature of the area.

Local private roads have stopped house purchase going through

The issue of local roads that are not in public ownership has seen a couple in Achill being prevented from buying a house, it was claimed by local councillor Paul McNamara. The Achill based Fianna Fáil councillor told the February meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District that the couple had agreed a mortgage with the bank but the sale could not go through because of the ownership of the road.
