In fact after Pearse wrote his famous oration, which he delivered with power and menace at O’Donovan Rossa’s funeral on June 29 1915, events swept him along to such an extent that he was never again able to visit the cottage.

The seemingly innocuous matter of Mayo County Council nominating someone for the Pádraig Pearse Award took a long time to get sorted out over the course of two meetings of the local authority this month. For John Hosty from Shantalla, the ‘physical force’ movement originated some time before 1910 with the publication of The United Irishman, a newspaper which kept a lot of young people from following ‘the constitutional movement’. When the 1913 Oireachtas was held in Galway, Seán McDermott used the occasion to swear in a number of young Galwegians to the IRB, and from then on they did all they could against the Irish Party, including distributing anti-enlisting literature at all hours of the night.

Progress being made on Connemara cultural centre

Amended plans for a project which will bring tens of thousands of visitors to Connemara have been agreed by Galway county councillors. A cultural centre and walking trail is being built adjacent to Patrick Pearse’s Cottage in Rosmuc and is due to be completed by 2016.
