€500k bill to fix damage to water services

The Mayo County Council was left with a €500,000 bill for repair works to water and sewerage systems in the county following the severe weather over the Christmas period. The extent of the work the council had to do in emergency repairs and the costs involved was revealed at a Water Supply and Sewerage SPC this week, by Conrad Harley, acting senior engineer with Mayo County Council.

Bad day for Mayo teams in Cup action

It was a bad day for the majority of Mayo sides in FAI Junior Cup action at the weekend. Of the four sides who were playing fifth round ties only Westport United made progress to the sixth round of the competition. Barry Kilgannon’s side were 2-1 winners over City United in the Sports Park on Sunday afternoon. Super League champions Ballina Town were knocked out of the competition by Ennis side Avenue United 5-1, while Castlebar Celtic were beaten 5-0 by St Peters FC. The other Mayo side in action in the cup Kiltimagh/Knock United were also beaten 5-0 by Wilton FC in Cork.

Art exhibition from Rural Training Centre

Service users from the HSE Rural Training Centre will hold their latest art exhibition in the Linenhall Arts Centre at 2.30pm on Thursday December 9 . Entitled Garden Notes, it is the result of workshops held at the Rural Training Centre during the summer months under the artistic direction of well-known Mayo artist Deirdre Walsh from Partry.

Michael Morahan, Partry, won a Volvo S60 car valued at €40,000, and €10,400 cash on last Saturday’s Winning Streak. Mr Morahan purchased his ticket from the west's luckiest Lotto agents, Michael and Helen MacHale, Newstand, Market Square, Castlebar.

Polkadot Challenge for CF

The countdown has begun for this year’s Western Lakes CC Polkadot Challenge, which will take place on Sunday July 18 in Ballinrobe. Money raised from the event will go towards the construction costs of the Mayo Cystic Fibrosis Unit at Mayo General Hospital.

Somthing for everyone as Western Lakes launches summer events

Western Lakes cycling club has three busy months ahead with three big promotions in July, August, and September, catering for leisure, racing, and recreational cyclists. Club chairman John Murphy said: “Our club aims to bring cycling to all facets of the community, by promoting these events we create events that people want to take part in, and bring cycling to their doorsteps, this could not be done without having a great working club where all our members help out.” The three events are the Polkadot challenge, the Ballinrobe two day event, and Cornmarket to Castle fun cycle.
