A royal visitor in ‘Pollok’s Time’

image preview

Earlier this year Galway Diary discussed the evictions implemented by Marcella Netterville and John Gerrard on their 7,000 acre estate at Ballinlass, near Mount Bellew Co Galway. In 1846 more that 400 families were heartlessly thrown out on the road, without any compensation. The land was being cleared to fatten cattle, which would have been far more profitable than tenants; many of whom, as the Great Famine tightened its terrible grip, were unable to pay their way. The Times of London famously commented that the Ballinlass evictions showed ‘the sublime indifference to social considerations of which no one but an Irish landowner is capable.’

Next year marks the 70th anniversary of the first show performed by St Mary’s Choral Society; now the Ballinrobe Musical Society. The musical committee spent many weeks deliberating and finally reached the unanimous decision to perform American composer and lyricist Jill Santiorello’s award winning show A Tale of Two Cities based on Charles Dickens’ popular novel. Set in both London and Paris at the beginning of the French revolution, A Tale of Two Cities has a rich mix of comedy, tragedy, conflict, love and resolution, combined with a score that will raise the roof.

Galway is very close to the hearts of the Perm company

It has been six years since the Tchaikovsky Perm State Ballet last visited Galway so needless to say there is great excitement about the company’s forthcoming return to the Town Hall with their staging of Giselle. One of the greatest Romantic ballets, Giselle is visually captivating and hauntingly beautiful. In the Perm Ballet’s production of this perennial classic, glorious costumes coupled with stunning sets and superb dancers guarantee a wonderful evening’s entertainment.

Allez les bleus, French cuisine is alive and well in Galway

New Galway restaurant Chez Azur, in an elegant upstairs room with stunning views out over the docks, is a quiet culinary oasis just a stone’s throw from the buzz of Quay Street. At the top of the stairs are two lovely rooms with lots of character, a little casual with dark wood tables, comfortable chairs, and lots of light from windows looking out over the boats in the harbour. This was my second visit here since its opening night back in March and it has developed quickly into a well run restaurant.
