As Cava rises phoenix-like from the flames on Middle Street in the city centre, its old lodgings have been given a makeover into a Scandi-style eatery known as dela. On walking in the door, it is impossible for any regular of the previous occupant not to compare one to the other. The layout is pretty much the same, there is a lunch-time deal of soup and a sandwich with coffee for €10 just like the old days, and they have patatas bravas on the menu, but then again, who doesn't these days? And there ends the similarities, as they are as different as the proverbial chalk and a sharing plate of Sheridan's cheese.

Needing little introduction at this stage, The Artist became the most awarded French film in history, scooping three Golden Globes, seven BAFTAs, and five Oscars for this highly entertaining romantic comedy-drama. Here is a chance to see it on the big screen as it was intended. Laugh, cry, love it.

The season of mellow fruitfulness is upon us again and it is time for the Linenhall Film Club to extend a warm welcome to cinephiles old and new. Kicking off an autumn programme full of goodies on Tuesday, September 18, is the uplifting and highly acclaimed Canadian film Monsieur Lazhar. After the suicide of a popular teacher at a Montreal school, the eponymous Monsieur Lazhar shows up at the stressed head’s office and is appointed as the class’s substitute teacher. A man of dignity and compassion, with his old-school methods Lazhar turns out to be an excellent teacher, bringing emotional stability to pupils troubled by the earlier events, but as the film unfolds his own tragic circumstances as a refugee from his native Algeria are revealed, in a film nominated for Best Foreign Film at this year’s Oscars.

CASABLANCA, THE much loved 1942 film, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, will be screened in the Róisín Dubh on Monday August 20 at 8pm.

MORE THAN 50 years after it premiered on London’s West End, Lionel Bart’s classic musical Oliver! remains as much-loved as ever. Now Galway audiences can look forward to a new staging of the show from Brian and Sean Powers’ Twins Production Company which takes to the Town Hall Theatre stage next week.

Last Thursday I was invited to attend a tasting of the renowned Kopi Luwak coffee at Mr Waffle, located on Scholars Walk, Newcastle. For those unfamiliar with Kopi Luwak, it is one of the world's most rare and expensive coffees, at almost €50 per cup. Not to put too fine a point on it, it is made from the beans of coffee berries which have been eaten by the Asian palm civet. Yes indeed folks, this unique coffee has the dubious distinction of being consumed before the customer has even taken a sip. I will take mine with milk, sugar, and a good dose of scepticism.
