World Head and Neck Cancer Day, which is observed on July 27, is a day dedicated to raising awareness of cancers affecting the mouth, throat, voice box, sinuses, middle ear and salivary glands. The day is also a reminder that challenges can remain even after cancer treatment ends.

There are approximately 450 new cases of oral cancer diagnosed every year in the island of Ireland. This figure is comparable to cervical cancer and melanoma and it has a high morbidity rate despite advances in surgical and reconstructive techniques. There are four to five deaths for every 10 cases of oral cancer. The rates for males are three times higher than females and lifestyle plays a significant role. Smoking, alcohol, and poor diet are the major risk factors, with tobacco linked to more than 75 per cent of cases of intra oral cancer.

Wednesday September 19 marks the second annual Mouth Cancer Awareness Day. Last year Eyre Square Dental Clinic participated and provided 67 free examinations. There are more than 300 cases of mouth cancer reported in Ireland every year. In Britain, the incidence of mouth cancer has increased faster than any other cancer in the past 25 years.
