Councillors annoyed about changes in management roles

There was anger among the elected members of the West Mayo Municipal District this week when it emerged that a senior member of the council's management team in the area was to be moved to a new position in the council, and the councillors had not been told officially of the change. The Mayo Advertiser understands that on Wednesday night a meeting of councillors from across the county took place, which was attended by 70 per cent of the elected councillors and they made a decision to request the holding of a special meeting of the council to discuss issues such as this.

With the general election out of the way for now, councillors in Mayo have called for the decision that saw 10,000 Mayo people being subsumed into the Galway West constituency to be reversed ahead of the next time that the voters go to the polls in a general election. Fine Gael Cllr Patsy O'Brien tabled a motion at the April meeting of the local authority calling to reinstate Mayo as a five seat constituency after the completion of the census at the end of the month.

Staunton wants to shake up the Seanad

Staunton says that he will be a forceful, experienced, voice in the Seanad for the voiceless hundreds of thousands of economic emigrants, forced to leave Ireland involuntarily. Along with representing the rights of returning immigrants from countries worldwide and work tirelessly towards highlighting and addressing difficulties experienced by so many upon their return.
