Castlebar Superintendent Willie Keaveney told the Castlebar joint policing committee that residents need to report incidents of anti social behaviour if they want to see action taken by the Gardaí to curb it in the town. The superintendent told a meeting on Monday: “We have been meeting with residents of the estates in relation to this issue and we have the powers under anti social behaviour laws to deal with issues, but it will mean that residents will have to come forward and provide evidence if we receive a complaint.”

Arising from a proposal by the Mayor of Castlebar Cllr Michael Kilcoyne at last Thursday night’s meeting of Castlebar Town Council, that consideration should be given to the holding of a protest outside the two head shops in Castlebar, it was unanimously agreed by the members that a protest should be arranged as a matter of urgency, given the strong local opposition to these shops, situated as they are so close to two of the local secondary schools and two of the primary schools in the town.

Fine Gael councillor Noreen Heston has come up with an interesting suggestion to tackle the problem of litter within the county. She put down a motion which was due to be debated at Castlebar Town Council’s meeting last night (Thursday) calling on Mayo County Council to make the facilities at the council’s landfill sites free to all residents of the county for one week.

Bronntanas is a group of HSE staff in Mayo, their families and friends and volunteers from various organisations, who come together in the weeks before Christmas to organise the giving of presents anonymously to children in families who are under financial strain. This is carried out under the guidance of the Childcare Department in Mayo HSE PCCC.

Urgent action is required to tackle the jobs crisis in Castlebar town according to Noreen Heston as she calls upon the Town Council to act without delay in putting a plan in place to address the situation. A cohesive package must be put in place involving all the appropriate state agencies including FÁS and the IDA, said Ms Heston.
