This weekend will be a big weekend of action for both Charlestown and Ballaghaderreen. The near neighbours have been focusing their attention on provincial honours since winning the Mayo intermediate and senior championships respectively.

Mitchels look to end finals wipe-out

Tonight, if things went to plan for Castlebar Mitchels, would have been a chance to mark themselves out as the premier side in the county across all the big grades this year. But double defeat last Sunday in the county senior and minor finals has left just the U21A title up for grabs for the Mitchels men. The county town side will not want to let this one slip through their grasp and will go into the game as favourites after overcoming a fancied Breaffy side at the last four stage of the competition. Both sides have bounced back from opening day defeats, with Castlebar losing to Aghamore who were beaten by their opponents on Friday night, Hollymount-Carramore at the semi-final stage and the south Mayo men going down to Westport in their first game back in the summer.

St Gerald’s and St Louis looking for double success for Mayo

Two Mayo schools will be looking to bring Connacht colleges glory in Charlestown on Saturday. In the showpiece game St Gerald’s Castlebar will be looking to go one better than they did last year when they lost out to St Coleman’s Claremorris at this stage of the competition. This year they will have to face the challenge of Summerhill College in the Aonghus Murphy Cup decider as they go looking for their fourth senior A Connacht Colleges title, their first since 1996.

Sunday showdown for students

One side has not won it since 1981, the other came out of a 60 plus year slumber to pick pocket two in a row in 1996 and 1997 but have not been able to get back to the summit in the 12 years since, one of those facts will become history on Sunday. The meeting of St Gerald’s, Castleba,r and St Colman’s, Claremorris, in the Connacht Colleges A final in Flanagan Park this Sunday will pit the best two sides in Mayo in battle for the Aonghus Murphy Cup at 3pm, with Roscommon’s Declan Hunt taking care of duties in the middle of the field.
