Andrew Moran from Newport has been announced as a finalist of the HB Let’s Sail competition, as part of the Volvo Ocean Race Galway Stopover 2009. Primary and Secondary school students entered the competition to design and build a boat, made using HB ice-cream sticks. As a finalist Andrew will meet with Ian Walker from the Green Dragon team at the Volvo Ocean Race on Sunday May 24. The overall winner, announced on the day, will receive a family trip to the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover in Stockholm.

Westport has one of the smallest fields running in the county for the June 5 election, with eight candidates putting their hats in the ring for the four seats. The major shift on the political landscape from the last local elections is the absence of one Frank Chambers from the ticket. The Newport based auctioneer has been a mainstay of politics in this area for a number of years, but with the redrawing of the boundaries seeing half the town of Newport being given over to Belmullet, Chambers decided to step away from the political circle.
