By the time the action comes to a conclusion this weekend across all the divisions the half way point of the league season will have been reached. In the Elverys Sports Super League last night Westport United and Iorras Aontaithe will have played the final catch up game, to leave all sides having played six games going into this weekend’s round of games. If Westport United pick up the points in that game they will have pushed themselves into second place in the table, while an Iorras win would see them move ahead of Westport into third place in the table, jumping from their current position of third bottom in the table.
Mayo soccer supporters will be hoping that Ballina Town and Westport United will be able to follow in the footsteps of Castlebar Celtic and book their place in the sixth round of the Umbro FAI Junior Cup on Sunday.
Bar three catch up games that took place last night after this paper went to print, it’s all about knock-out cup and shield action this weekend in Mayo — the Connacht Gold Cup and Shield to be precise. The catch up games that took place last night included what potentially looked like a cracker of a game between Claremorris and Castlebar Celtic in Concannon Park in the Super League. The game is one of two that Celtic have in hand over league leaders Westport United who they are trying to chase down — and if they manage to pick up wins in both they will close the gap at the top to seven points.

Newport Town FC have moved from strength to strength following their first season back in the Mayo League after a 10 year absence. Last year their hard work fell just short of a promotional spot, a massive feat for such a small club. Eyes are firmly set on the upcoming season with new goals and challenges ahead. As new horizons approach Pat Sweeney has become player manager of the club, balancing leadership both on and off the field. The club is also on the lookout for a full time assistant manager who can work hand in hand with Sweeney to inspire the players to reach their full potential. Interest to join the club is also increasing, both locally and further afield, with the club sending out an open invitation to anyone who may be interested in training with and joining the club. Training takes place at 8pm on the Castlebar Celtic astro pitch every Thursday. All players are welcome.
A total of 16 Mayo teams will be in action in the Connacht Junior Cup this Sunday with all ties kicking off at 2pm. Bangor Hibs, Clew Bay United, Conn Rangers, Ballyheane, Glenhest Rovers, Snugboro United, Fahy Rovers, Kilmore, Ballyvary Blue Bombers, and Ballyglass will all be in action at home. With Killala, Partry Athletic, Newport Town, Ballina United, Moy Villa, and Straide and Foxford United all hitting out across the province in search of a place in the next round. Charlestown Athletic will make the trip to Ballyheane in a local derby as will Achill Rovers who head to Snugboro United, Mulranny United will go to Fahy Rovers as do Hollister who have a short trip to Kilmore, and Crossmolina who go to south Mayo to face Ballyglass.
