Large turnout on Clare Island as early turn out low across rest of the county

The turnout in Mayo for polling on the Fiscal Compact Referendum was slow yesterday morning as drizzle replaced the sunshine the county had been used to in the previous week. However on Clare Island, where voting took place on Tuesday, the turnout was at 52 per cent according to the office of Fintan Murphy, the returning officer for Mayo.

The cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, Councillor Christy Hyland, members and management of Westport Town Council, would like to sincerely thank everybody who participated in the St Patrick’s Day Parade which was a tremendous success. Indeed the theme of the parade ‘Teamwork, Everyone’s a Winner’, in recognition of 2012 being designated as The International Year of The Co-operative, was really to the fore on the day.

This photograph was taken in the early 1940s and shows a happy group of children in Sickeen. The wall at their backs was the boundary wall of St Brendan’s National School. In the background on the left are the backs of houses which fronted on to St Brendan’s Road. They were occupied by the Lillis family, the Lohan family, the Molloys – home of ‘Five Goal Molloy’ aka Sonny, Maurice O’Connell who worked in the post office, Jim Redington who later became Mayor of Galway, and Tom Walsh who was a teacher in St Brendan’s School.
