The annual pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick, known locally as Reek Sunday, is one of the major events in Westport and will attract over 25,000 visitors to this unique and historic event.

Minister of State Michael Ring has welcomed the announcement from Minister for Environment, Phil Hogan that he has given approval for South West Mayo Development Company Limited, to approve funding of €200,000 to Croagh Patrick Holiday Village for the construction and development of a Croagh Patrick Holiday Hostel, in Murrisk. Funding will be provided under the Encouragement of Tourism Activities measure of the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013.

Locals in Murrisk are up in arms about what they have described as ongoing pollution at the local pier.

South West Mayo Development Company chairman Michael Biggins has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan, that LEADER programme funding is to be released. The programme was embargoed since February 7 while Department officials conducted an audit of the level of project activity in all the local development companies. Reductions to the rate of co-funding meant that the original project allocations given to each local development company needed to be reduced.

A code of practice for Croagh Patrick is about to be drawn up with the council working closely with the community council in Murrisk.

Westport was just one point behind the winner of the Tidiest Town in Ireland for 2012, which was awarded to Abbeyshrule.

The Tochar Phádraig Pilgrim Walk from Ballintubber Abbey to Croagh Patrick will take place tomorrow, Saturday, departing the Abbey at 8.30am. 

The feile is back this year to raise funds for the children's cystic fibrosis ward in Mayo General Hospital with a fundraising family day out in Murrisk on Sunday August 5 at 2pm.

The Tochar Phádraig Pilgrim Walk from Ballintubber Abbey to Croagh Patrick takes place on Sunday July 29 departing the Abbey at 8.30am. A back up car will accompany all the walkers to the end at Murrisk.
