Castlebar panto was a huge success once again

With standing ovations and many of the 3,500 audience returning to see the show, Castlebar Pantomime's version of The Wonderful Story of Mother Goose was easily the most enjoyable in 26 years for both audience and cast. The original script became unrecognisable with the directors doing their best to re-write a shorter version, while Walter Donoghue as Mother Goose did his absolute best to ad lib in as many new lines as possible as the shows progressed. But local references, many recognisable faces from around Mayo, a cast of 150 people including 70 junior chorus members, outstanding solo singers, comic lines, colourful dance routines, the hard working Castlebar Pantomime committee as producers, amazing harmonies by musical director John Flatley, imaginative choreography by Jason Guthrie, along with clever direction by Sharon Lavelle and Donna Ruane all resulted in a widely enjoyable production.

The Wonderful Story of Mother Goose brought to life in Castlebar

Mayo's longest running pantomime, the Castlebar pantomime, presents at the Royal Theatre, Castlebar, from January 12 to 16 its production of The Wonderful Story of Mother Goose. Mother Goose, who is played by Castlebar pantomime dame supremo Walter Donoghue, has it all — family, friends, Fairyland fairies looking out for her, and a magical golden egg laying goose. Mother Goose lives with her beautiful daughter Jill Goose (Tara Kelly from Kiltimagh) and a loveable son Billy Goose (David Tobin) in their humble home in Merrilea. The only shadow on people's happiness in Merrilea is the aptly named Clarence Creep, Squire of Cheatham Hall (cleverly played by James Murray from Coarsepark, Castlebar). His brother was the previous Squire of Merrilea but strangely did not make out a will to protect his son Colin (Terry O'Hara) from a life of poverty and by law all rights as a squire were passed to Clarence Creep. Was this really justice or the work of the conniving Clarence Creep?

Every year Castlebar Pantomime proudly claims that its current production is the best to date. Well, this year Puss In Boots has gone further than Castlebar Panto's widest expectations. Following an extensive campaign to gain new pantomime members, the wealth of talent gathered on the refurbished Royal Theatre stage has totally illuminated the usual high standard production expected by Castlebar Pantomime audiences.

Renmore Panto’s Mother Goose

IT WAS all the way back in 1979 that Renmore staged its first panto and in the decades since the show has gone from strength to strength and today it is one of the highlights of Galway’s Christmas season.

Castlebar pantomime turns 25 with Sing a Song of Sixpence

It is a long time since Castlebar pantomime performed a show based on a nursery rhyme, the last one being Mother Hubbard in 1999, Mother Goose of 1993 is only associated with nursery rhymes, which then leaves Ole King Cole in 1990, making a Castlebar pantomime based around a nursery rhyme a bit of rarity and in the case of Sing A Song Of Sixpence a rather brilliant show!
