Will drink-driving proposals destroy rural Westmeath?

Government proposals to lower the drink-driving limit from 80mg to 50mg per 100ml of blood have met with mixed reaction locally, with many concerned that the implementation of the new legislation will sound the death knell for rural pubs.

The Shambles Barracks, 1910

image preview

This photograph was taken from the first floor of The Galway Arms at 2.25pm on a summer day in 1910 when these people were processing over O’Brien’s Bridge to the site of Saint Mary’s College for the laying of the foundation stone for that school. The large crowd is being led by a group of priests all wearing birettas, followed by several RIC men. There is an interesting mix of styles on view with some women wearing patterned Galway shawls while others are sporting large fashionable hats. Virtually all of the men are wearing headgear, be they hard hats or soft caps. Notice the tramtracks.

Bats take over Finbar Hoban presents at Bar Ritz

image preview

Dublin band Bats were formed in 2006, with the same intensity as Adebisi Shank, they could well be Ireland’s best kept secret. More bands like Bats need to write songs as snappy as the opener from their first EP Cruel Sea Scientist titled “Death to Kent Hovind”, heck it should be made compulsory. Despite the song being only just over a minute and a half long, this aggressive attack on the American’s young earth creationist does its job in portraying the incredibly black humour Bats convey in their music. Where Bats excel is in their approach to their song writing. So you get bursts of weird, almost pop, madness alongside heavier riffs and quirky, bouncy, little passages all mixed up with their unusual approach to vocals.

The Clean Corner

All true of course for those who may have had the luxury of a maid, a cook, and sometimes a nanny to lighten the domestic load. Manuals in the early part of the century often were often full of budgets, timetables, and how to run a home with live in staff.
