A committee of parents concerned about sustained harassment and violence against their children in Castlebar is to meet with the local Superintendent and senior HSE social worker next week to try and find solutions to this growing problem.

The Western Region Drug and Alcohol awareness week which runs from November 12 to 16 aims to increase awareness of drug and alcohol related issues and highlight the supports that are available.

The elected members of the Castlebar Electoral Area Committee have directed Mayo County Council to stop all funding to Nephin Valley group water scheme. The decision came after the Nephin Valley scheme sought a €900 contribution per house from another scheme, the Derrymartin Group Water Scheme, to which it has been connected. The new Derrymartin scheme had been installed and laid by Mayo County Council and all connections made, but the water has not been turned on by the Nephin Valley side who wanted a €900 per house contribution for the scheme.

Labour Party Castlebar town councillor Harry Barrett was the only member of either Mayo County Council or Castlebar Town Council to oppose a notice of motion in relation to abortion put before both councils this week. Independent Cllr Frank Durcan who sits on both of the local authorities put forward a notice of motion to both councils stating “that the members resolve, in keeping with the will of the Irish people as emphatically expressed in the referendum of 1983, to oppose any form of legalisation of abortion under any circumstances”.

Members of Castlebar Men’s Shed at Moneen Enterprise Centre, Castlebar, (located near Mayo Movie World) held their first meeting this week and opened their doors to the public.

The July meeting of the Mayo County Council this week heard a presentation from Mary O’Sullivan, the HSE West resource officer for suicide prevention and Máire Ní Dhomhnaill, a counsellor from the Family Resource Centre in Castlebar. The pair explained that they were working the Mayo Suicide Prevention Group, which was made up of some 50 organisations which aimed to help people and promote mental health. One of the suggestions that was put forward was that the Mayo County Council could provide funding so it could recruit a part-time suicide prevention officer, which could work in a similar role to that of the road safety officer. The idea was supported by the councillors, but the county manager told the meeting that while he was supportive of it, he could not commit to such an investment.

A Castlebar councillor is calling for a halt to parking on footpaths by personnel involved in collecting cash from banks.

A statement issued on behalf of Taoiseach Enda Kenny has “welcomed the announcement that the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has approved the registration of the Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar.”
