There was widespread criticism of advertisements placed in a number of local and national papers at the end of last month which said that hundreds of bogs would be affected by new regulations on turf cutting – when in reality there were only three.

It was a night of celebration for Mayo at the annual Local Authority Members Association (LAMA) Awards in Dublin last week. The county picked up four different awards for the Great Western Greenway Project. The main prize was the Grand Prix which went to the best overall project in the country marked by a panel of judges. Other awards picked up were for the Best Green Authority, which was won by Westport Town Council, and Best Tourism Attraction and Best Recreational Facility went to Castlebar Town Council for the Greenway.

Some 300 people attended the septic tank public meeting organised by Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway-Walsh, in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel, Belmullet, on Monday evening last. The resounding message from the meeting was that people are not going to register their septic tanks or pay any fees at least until the long awaited Belmullet Sewerage Scheme is completed.

Road safety officer with Mayo County Council, Noel Gibbons, told members of the roads and transportation SPC there has been a reduction in the number of road deaths nationally and in the county, with six road deaths in Mayo to date this year.

Sinn Fein councillor Rose Conway-Walsh this week voted against the adoption of a part eight report on a development of three dwellings for older people and a commercial unit at Church Road, Belmullet, at the Belmullet Electoral Area Committee meeting. Cllr Conway-Walsh gave her reasons for not supporting the item saying: “I can’t support this. I think that Church Road is congested enough already. It has seen the landscape change dramatically over the past number of years. This is not in the interests of best planning.”

A large number of Turasóireacht Acla Teo members attended its annual general meeting on Friday September 16, in Ted Lavelle’s, Cashel. Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, was the guest of honour and Councillor Austin Francis O’Malley, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, addressed the meeting before agreeing to preside over the election of officers.
