Merlin College in Doughiska has grown to such unprecedented levels that it now pins its hopes on the Department of Education granting an extension to the building so that all children wishing to attend will be accommodated, especially those from the community in the east of the city.

I’ll never forget the day we were told that we would not be attending school due to the pandemic. Someone from a few desks away announced how he was going to throw a massive party to celebrate “getting a few days off” – it didn’t take long for that to become a party of one. When going into lockdown for the first time I felt as if it was unlikely that I would learn anything. How wrong I was.

Merlin College and Coláiste Bhaile Chláir have become the first schools in Galway to sign up to participate in a new initiative aimed at creating a school environment fully inclusive of LGBTI+ students.

"Merlin College - Nobody is different because everybody is", is a line that has been used in Merlin College since its’ inception in 2013 to celebrate the great diversity that exists in the school. The beauty and drive that comes from such diversity is not only reflected in the sporting, cultural and artistic endeavours of the students but the academic also, as is evident again, from this year’s Leaving Certificate Results.

Merlin College will host an open night for incoming first year students and their parents on Monday September 30. To ensure that parents have an opportunity at securing one of only 110 places available, they are being advised that they must attend the event as any late applications will be unsuccessful due to demand.
