The Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, this week said the IDA had confirmed to him that it will to undertake a feasibility study to assess the possible construction of an advance factory in Castlebar in an effort to attract a new major industry to the town. Earlier this year the IDA had announced plans to build similar factories in Letterkenny, Athlone and Waterford. The absence of Castlebar from this list raised the ire of a Labour Castlebar Town Councillor, Harry Barrett who raised the issue at the March meeting of Castlebar Town Council.

The successful projects were St Michael’s Church, Ballina: €7,000; Enniscoe House, Castlehill: €14,519; Killala Bathing House, Killala: €6,478; Lavelle’s Pharmacy, Killala: €7,100; Thomond House, Westport: €7,920; Holy Trinity Church, Westport: €14,983; Owenmore House, Correens:  €15,000; Bridge House, Westport: €15,000; and Ballinafad House, Ballinafad: €15,000.

On Monday, Claremorris will announce its step into the future when it sets out its plans to become Ireland’s first fibre town. The project will be launched by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny in the McWilliam Park Hotel in the town.

Fine Gael Deputy for Longford-Westmeath, James Bannon, has welcomed the announcement that Longford District Court has been chosen as the new centralised court for custody cases in counties Longford and Westmeath.

Lisa Chambers will launch her campaign for the upcoming local elections in the Welcome Inn Hotel Castlebar next Friday night, February 28, at 9pm. Ms Chambers who was selected by the party to run in the new eight seater Castlebar area, will have her campaign launched by Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Justice, Niall Collins TD, next week. Chambers is hoping to take a seat alongside her two running mates Cllr Al McDonnell and Cllr Blackie Gavin in May’s elections.

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Jobs and Enterprise Dara Calleary has accused the Government of engaging in an arrogant and highly misleading campaign on pylons. The Ballina based Dáil deputy said this week: “The comments from the Taoiseach and the Minister Pat Rabbitte this week show just out of touch this Government has become. It clearly demonstrates that the Government has absolutely no intention of taking on board the genuine concerns of communities and intends to just press ahead with the large scale construction of overhead lines regardless of any objections.”

The increasing rapprochement between An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and ‘rebel’ Galway West TD Brian Walsh took another step forward this week with Walsh set to apply for re-admittance to the parliamentary party.
