Son of Ernie O’Malley to give a talk on O’Malley’s life in Castlebar

Mayo County Library is starting the year with a once-off opportunity to hear about the life of Castlebar born revolutionary hero Ernie O’Malley by his son. The talk entitled Ernie O'Malley, A Life Spent Beyond the Pale will be delivered by Cormac O’Malley in Castlebar Library on Friday January 16 at 7.30pm and is free to the public.

Immigrant stories find a home at Mayo County Library

Advocates for the immigrant community gathered in Castlebar recently to celebrate the Mayo Intercultural Action Oral History Project. The project, which was supported by South West Mayo Development Company, saw immigrants from different countries come together to record audio accounts of their lives and migration to county Mayo. Project participants included people from as far afield as Latvia, Poland, Russia, Nigeria, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Burma/Myanmar.

The County Community Forum Instrument Music Bank, in the ownership of Mayo County Community Forum, is a new resource for young musicians in Mayo. Instruments from this bank can be borrowed by young people (up to 18) in the south west Mayo area for a period of up to one year.

Local LGBT group highlight International Day Against Homophobia

TOST? the local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender group is highlighting its services in conjunction with International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO Day) which takes place today, May 17. IDAHO Day is celebrated in more than 100 countries, with advocates staging hundreds of events and actions the world over. In Mayo, TOST? alongside the Family Resource Centre will have an information stand in the Mayo County Library; the library also has a selection of books available which celebrates diversity.

From Kells to Kindle — a unique exhibition on books and book production through the ages, will take place at Mayo County Library from Tuesday May 1 to Saturday May 5 inclusive.

Mayo Healthy Reading Scheme

“At least five per cent of the population (of Europe) suffers from serious diagnosable mental illness; between 15 and 20 per cent of European adults are affected by more general mental health problems,” according to the World Health Organisation. Yet there can still be a significant taboo attached to mental health difficulties. However the simple presence of books relating to mental health issues in a public library, available and accessible to all, can help reduce this stigma, and raise awareness of such issues in the public mind. This is the aim of the Mayo Healthy Reading Scheme, a joint initiative between Mayo County Library and the HSE West.

Thousands flock to county town for Heart of Castlebar street festival

An estimated 10,000 people descended on Castlebar for day three of the inaugural Heart of Castlebar - Féile Sráide ‘Croí Chaisleán an Bharraigh’ last Saturday. The three-day event provided a massive economic boost to the county town where shoppers were told by Taoiseach Enda Kenny to support their local businesses.
