English and Knight to be honoured by Mayo League

The Mayo Football League has announced that the recipients of the prestigious Henry Downes Service to Football Awards for 2015 are Patrick English from Achill Rovers and Gerry Knight, Ballina Town. Padraig McHale, chairman Mayo Football League, said: “I would like to congratulate Patrick English and Gerry Knight on winning this prestigious award. They are certainly worthy recipients as both have given a lifetime of service to the game and are highly respected within the county and beyond. It is fitting that an award named after such a great servant is bestowed upon two gentlemen of the game.’’

There have been many attempts by a lot of members over the years in securing a premises for the team, however dreams don’t happen over night. 

€2 million boost for Mary Robinson Centre

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny this week confirmed that the cabinet had approved €2 millon for the proposed Mary Robinson Centre in Ballina. The centre which will be built in Victoria House in Ballina, Mary Robinson’s birthplace on the banks of the River Moy, will be Ireland’s first Presidential Archive. Mayo County Council had provided an initial €1.5 million package to purchase the house and included the site next door and the construction of a new annex on the site

Mulranny improvement works opened

Michael Ring, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, and Cllr Michael Holmes, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, officially opened the new Mulranny footpath and village enhancement scheme last Friday morning. The multi-million euro development consisted of 1.8 kilometres of improvements to the N59 comprising new footpaths, traffic calming, pavements, a viewing promenade, bicycle lanes, pedestrian crossings, picnic tables, and benches.

Mayo University Hospital wins two awards at the Saolta University Health Care Group Staff Achievement Awards

Staff at Mayo University Hospital received two awards at the recent Saolta University Health Care Group Staff Recognition Awards which took place on Friday November 13 at an event in the Sligo Park Hotel. A group of staff from A Ward in the hospital who dealt with a fire earlier this year and ensured the safety of patients and staff received the Unsung Hero Award.

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has urged all voters in Mayo to check the draft register of electors which is available at both their local county council office and online at www.checktheregister.ie until next Wednesday, November 25.

Heart Project with Mayo farmers scoops top national award

A recent awareness campaign aimed at alerting farmers in Mayo to the signs and symptoms of a heart attack has won a top award at this year’s Irish Medical Times Healthcare Awards. This innovative project stemmed from a collaboration between local heart and stroke charity Croí and the HSE in Mayo as part of the on-going work of the Mayo Action on Heart Disease and Stroke Programme. The winning initiative was jointly led by Croí nurse Ailish Houlihan and Ann Marie Brown, cardiac rehab co-ordinator at Mayo General Hospital.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny had a busy schedule around Castlebar on Monday, first launching the West Region Action Plan for Jobs alongside Minister for Jobs, Enterprise, and Innovation Richard Bruton in Cashin Print in Castlebar. The pair followed that with a tree planting ceremony at the IDA Advance facility on the Breaffy Road, which is due to see construction begin in quarter one of next year, before the Taoiseach paid a visit to the site of the new swimming pool and Outdoor Pursuits Academy at Lough Lannagh on which work began this week.

Council to ask state to step in and purchase Westport House NAMA loans

Mayo County Council's Economic Development and Enterprise Support Strategic Policy Committee, threw their weight behind finding a solution to securing the future of Westport House. The committee held a special meeting today (Wednesday, October 14) to discuss the future of the attraction after NAMA placed a loan attached to the estate up for sale as part of their Project Arrow portfolio.
