Illegal dumping still taking place throughout Mayo

Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny has expressed further disappointment that illegal dumping continues to take place throughout Co Mayo. The Mayo TD recently discovered a site where illegal dumping had taken place in the Pontoon area only metres away from Lough Cullen. He was partaking in a practice cycle to prepare for the Mayo Pink Ribbon Appeal 100km charity cycle due to take place on Saturday, May 1. He has constantly raised the issue of illegal dumping and the negative impact it has on the Irish countryside.

Minister Dempsey opens Great Western Greenway

Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey TD was in west Mayo last Friday to officially open the Great Western Greenway from Newport to Mulranny. Also being officially opened was the popular new walking and cycling route through Westport town.

Durcan slams money spent on Clarke collection

Controversial Castlebar Independent councillor Frank Durcan slammed the amount of money that will be spent by Mayo County Council on housing and maintaining the Clarke Collection in Ballina. Under the freedom of information act Cllr Durcan received a copy of the contract entered into by Mayo County Council with Mrs Anne Clarke the widow of the late Jackie Clarke who amassed the collection over a number of years.

Cawley Cup final spots up for grabs

The domestic rugby season is racing to its conclusion for another year and three Mayo sides are still in with a chance of glory in the Cawley Cup this weekend. Castlebar, Westport, and Ballina all made their way into the last four last weekend, setting up a local derby in one semi-final, with Westport hosting Castlebar in Carrowholly and Ballina making their way north to take on Sligo.

Mayo jobless numbers dropped last month

There has been a decline in the number of people in Mayo on the live register last month, with a reduction of 189 from 13,346 signing on in January of this year to 13,157 in February.
