Mayo Business Award finalists announced

The Mayo Chambers are pleased to announce that the adjudicators have confirmed the finalists in each category of the Mayo Business Awards 2008 in association with Bord Gáis Networks. The awards ceremony will take place on Friday November 21 in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, where the winners and runners up will be announced. The finalists are as follows:

“Perhaps I should have ran for the county council before when I was a bit younger, but I have enjoyed my four and a half years so far and I’m looking forward to seeing out the last few months.” With the official news breaking this week that Fine Gael party whip Paddy McGuinness would not be running for re-election, it brings to an end the public life for a second time of the popular County Monaghan native. McGuinness, who had stepped away from public life before after a number of terms on Castlebar Town Council, was tempted back into public life when Enda Kenny came calling before the last local elections. “I had come in to do a job last time around and I was very tempted to stay on, but I had made a decision before that I would be doing one term and I had to stick with it.” The job as McGuinness saw it was to help the party grow and bring them all together as one for the term of the council which, for the most part, he has done very successfully.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny TD has reminded anyone wishing to partake in the United States Visa Lottery that the deadline is fast approaching. The official deadline for applications is Monday December 1. A total of 132 applications from Ireland were successful for the 2009 Visa and anyone who is successfully selected in the 2010 Visa Lottery should expect to receive notification in May/June 2009. The website for accessing the application form can be downloaded from and instructions are provided on how to partake in the lottery.

One hundred more people added to the live register in Mayo

New figures released this week by the Central Statistics Office show that 103 more people in Mayo are on the live register since last month, bringing the figure to 12,231 people registered which is a 4,203 increase from statistics released this time last year.
