The Irish Food Producers Awards have been created to recognise excellence, quality, and innovation within the food and beverage sector in Ireland. The overall winner will be awarded the title of the SuperValu Irish Food Producer of the Year, which recognises one supplier above all others who clearly demonstrates excellence in all aspects of his/her business.

Mayo footballing star and former Swinford player David Heaney, who only announced his retirement from county football yesterday, has transferred to Claregalway for the coming season. His transfer was rubber-stamped by the Galway County Board last weekend.

The week-long dizzying festival of football that embraced every corner of Mayo last week came to an end on Saturday afternoon, with the FAI AGM in Breaffy House Resort. The festival of football which was promised by the FAI when they first announced that Mayo would host the AGM was duly delivered upon and from Sunday to Saturday Mayo got football fever. From Killala to Partry and Ballina to Westport, the people of Mayo came out in their thousands to meet and greet the top brass of the FAI, including Ireland senior manager Giovanni Trapattoni whose “walkabout” in Westport was one of the highlights of the week.

Mayo senior management announced their championship panel of 30 this week. Apparently they deliberated on the topic for all of last week and arrived at Pearse Park, Longford, last Saturday for the All-Ireland u21 semi-final with one or two places still up for grabs. On the evidence they witnessed there they filled the final few places before releasing it to the press. In my opinion the panel selected seems to have plenty of strength in depth both for defence and midfield. However I am more than a little concerned about the true quality of Mayo’s attack heading into championship football. We had one of the lowest scoring averages throughout the National League campaign which gives some cause for concern.

Playing for Life was founded by well-known sportswoman and broadcaster Tracy Piggott following a visit to Ethiopia in 2004.
