Mayo County Council brings third level grant information to Facebook

Mayo County Council is the first county in the country to inform their students about the availability of higher education grants on Facebook. An information page has been set up to assist students and their parents through the application process for a higher education grant. Application form and guidance notes for the 2010/2011 Higher Education Grants Scheme are now available for downloading on www.mayococo.ie.

No deal with Gavin for supporting Guthrie for VEC post

The Fine Gael party in Castlebar has not made any deal with Fianna Fáil councillor Blackie Gavin to get him to support former town councillor Kevin Guthrie’s appointment to a vacant post on Mayo VEC, according to Cllr Ger Deere. The post, which was vacated by Fine Gael councillor Noreen Heston when she resigned from the VEC in March, was filled by former Mayor of Castlebar, Kevin Guthrie, on Tuesday night when he beat fellow nominee Tony Deffley by five votes to four in council chamber. “I can categorically deny that any deal has been done with Cllr Gavin in relation to him supporting Kevin Guthrie for the post in the VEC,” Cllr Deere said. “He made up his own mind in relation to it and thinks Kevin Guthrie is the best person for the position.”

Mayo Co Co and Castlebar TC pay tributes to late Sean Smyth

Both Castlebar Town Council and Mayo County Council paid tribute to the late Sean Smyth at their monthly meetings last week. Mr Smyth, who passed away recently, was a former Town Clerk of Castlebar Urban District Council from 1961 to 1968 as it was called at the time, and latterly the CEO of the Mayo County Enterprise Board from it’s inception in 1968 until his retirement in 1993.

The announcement this week that €20,370,746 has been granted to Mayo County Council under the 2010 Regional and Local Roads Programme, the third highest allocation in the country, which was welcomed by Mayo TDs Dara Calleary and Beverley Flynn, was described as a shortfall by the acting director of services with Mayo County Council, Michael Mongan, who outlined that in the past two years that this grant has seen a dramatic decrease.
