The construction of a €279 million super fast transatlantic cable to greatly boost data speeds between Europe and the US, has been described as a game changer for the Mayo economy.

A number of changes to the housing grant schemes operated by Mayo County Council will be put before the elected members of the council when they next meet. At the Ballina Municipal District April meeting, director of services for Mayo County Council, Paul Benson, told the district members: “Housing grants are on the adjourned April agenda, hopefully we will get moving on that. We have approved grants up to December 2014. It’s important we do get the changes recommended through, because we are looking at currently being able to approve grants up to the end of February this year, and that’s it until probably next November unless we get changes.”

The members of Mayo County Council paid tribute to a number of people who had recently passed away at their April meeting on Monday. Included in those was the late John Durcan, who was a brother of Cllr Frank Durcan. The elected members of Mayo County Council approved the raising of a €7.3 million loan to fund the purchase of a 17.5 per cent stake in Ireland West Airport Knock by seven local authorities (Mayo County Council, Sligo County Council, Roscommon County Council, Donegal County Council, Leitrim County Council, Galway County Council, and Galway City Council) in the region at their meeting on Monday.
