A grieving daughter has issued a road safety appeal ahead of the May Bank Holiday weekend after a freak accident which saw her boyfriend accidentally drive over the body of her father, who had died on the road while walking home at night.

Fire parade, music, and visual arts at Uisneach

This May bank holiday weekend will see Ireland’s oldest Bealtaine celebration on the Hill of Uisneach on Saturday, May 2 from 2-11.30pm. The Uisneach Fire Festival’s unique ceremonial fire parade at dusk will be the centrepiece of the day-long celebration which will feature artisan foods and crafts, holistic healing, a heritage talks tent, re-enactments, and guided heritage walks. The main stage area will feature a full music programme including the Máirtín O’Connor Band and Mary Coughlan. A special Clarke’s Bar Tent will also feature a traditional music programme throughout the day.

Get on your bike for the An Post Yeats Tour

The An Post Cycle Series, supported by An Post, the Irish Sports Council, and Local Sports Partnerships, encourages people of all fitness levels to get on their bikes in one of the five cycling tours across the country between May and September. The An Post Yeats Tour of Sligo kicks off the series on the May Bank Holiday Weekend and this year is part of the ‘Yeats 2015’ celebrations where cyclists can enjoy the wonderful scenery of Sligo, the spiritual home of the great poet.
