They moved in to Kirwan’s Lane, then to Eyre Square for three years, before settling into a vacant house in the suburbs, which has been known as the Presentation Convent ever since.

Mayo athletes return home with haul of medals

The four Mayo athletes who were competing in Athens in the Special Olympics Word Summer Games returned home to heroes welcomes with a huge haul of medals you. The four strong contingent of Mayo athletes Deirdre Gannon. Deirdre Garvin, Paul Kavanagh and Mary McDermott came back to Mayo with six medals among them. The athletes from Claremorris, Swinford, Castlebar and Westport were part of a 126 strong team who brought back 107 medals from the games.

There will be a number of medals coming home to Mayo from the Special Olympics World Games in Athens next week. Four Mayo athletes — Deirdre Gannon, Paul Kavanagh, Mary McDermott and Deirdre Gannon — are taking part in a hectic few days of competition.

Mayo athletes gearing up for World Summer games

There will be plenty of Mayo eyes and ears looking and listening out for results from Athens from Saturday week when the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games kick off. Four Mayo athletes will be representing Ireland in the Greek city and all are going for gold. Mary McDermott from Swinford will be taking part in the bocce competition, while Deirdre Gannon from Westport and her namesake Deirdre Garvin from Claremorris will be competing in the bowling competition. Castlebar’s Paul Kavanagh will be hoping to have his serve and volley in top shape when he takes on the best in the world in the table tennis event.

A 58-year-old woman, who when drunk hit a car while driving, was convicted of drink driving at this week’s sitting of Ballina District Court.
