The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) and the Simon Communities of Ireland have launched the eighth annual RIAI Simon Open Door Weekend — May 12 and 13.

The next meeting of the Mayo Open Coffee Club (MOCC) will take place in a new venue at the Harlequin Hotel, Castlebar, on Wednesday November 3 next, facilitated by Liam Horan from Slí Nua Communications & Careers (www.slinuacommunications.com ) and Mark Stephens from Mark Stephens Architects (www.markstephensarchitects.com) who will explain how to use social media in business.

Simon Open Door is a unique and interesting fundraising event where architects from all over Ireland provide house-design advice to members of the public in return for a €50 donation to the Simon Communities of Ireland. The event takes place on April 24 and 25 with six Mayo architect practices participating.

Anyone hoping to build, renovate or extend their home may be interested in the following initiative. The Simon Community and the RIAI have teamed up to provide a one hour architecture consultation in return for a donation of €75 to the charity. The event is to take place on Saturday March 7. Five architecture practices in Mayo are taking part in the fundraiser: Axo Architects, Cox Power and Associates, Mark Stephens, McGann Scahill and Studio Plus Two Architects.

Have you seen the exhibition which is currently on display in Market Square, Castlebar? It certainly is a crowd stopper and is called Everyday Architecture - an exhibition of projects in Mayo, made by architects, which is currently touring the county. The exhibition considers how everyone's everyday experience can be improved through good design; be it in a house, a shopfront, a piece of furniture, a moment of life framed in a view, a detail, or how daylight enters a room.
