There is just over a month left until 100,000 people flock to Galway to enjoy this year’s SeaFest, Ireland’s national maritime festival — and this week, Marine minister Minister Creed was in town to launch the event.

The Achill Experience, aquarium and visitor centre on Achill Island has checked in a new and very rare guest – a white lobster. The Marine Institute said such a specimen is extremely rare and very unusual to Irish waters. A genetic mismatch means that the lobster is not the traditional dark blue colour.

PwC, Ireland’s largest professional services firm, has announced a new three year headline sponsorship of the ‘Our Ocean WealthSummit’, the largest national gathering of Ireland’s marine and business communities, held annually as part of SeaFest. This year, the Summit will take place in the National University of Ireland, Galway, on June 30.

An international team of scientists from six countries set sail last week on Ireland’s national research vessel, RV Celtic Explorer on a major trans-Atlantic voyage to study the impact of climate change on the ocean. Departing from St. John’s Newfoundland, and due to arrive in Galway on 23 May, the Galway-based Marine Institute-led team of experts are surveying a transect of the Atlantic Ocean last surveyed 20 years ago to investigate carbon dioxide levels in the ocean. The survey is essential to understand and project how carbon dioxide emissions are accumulated in the oceans and the atmosphere, as well as its effects on the acidification of the ocean.

Thousands of visitors will flock to Galway for SeaFest 2017 and enjoy an exciting programme of events that celebrate the sea. The national maritime festival will be held from June 30 to July 2 2017 in Galway Harbour, and this year, the festival will expand to include new activities in the nearby Latin Quarter and Salthill.

This week, Foras na Mara (The Marine Institute) Galway, invited a large group of Sea Scouts from Gasoga Mara na Gaeltachta, Lettermore to Grattan Beach. Galway Atlantaquaria is currently caring for an extremely rare Slipper Lobster found off Aran recently. This is the first recorded landing of this species this far into the Atlantic north — The last time this species was discovered so far from its original habitat was in 2011 by a Cornish fisherman, east of Falmouth England and Cork, 2007.
