Louisburgh, Newport and Claremorris may face broadcast blackout

With the recent announcement by Mayo Community TV Ltd that the plug will be pulled on its transmitter in Drummin on September 30, chairperson Joe Gibbons warned that the areas of Claremorris, Newport and Louisburgh may also have their transmitters shut down, which would affect all householders in the area who rely on these transmitters to receive their television stations.

23k awarded to Mayo youth organisations

Three youth organisations in the Mayo area have been awarded €23,323 through the Artist in Youth Work Residency Award run by NYCI’s Youth Arts programme. Castlebar Neighbourhood Youth Project has received €10,000 to create an indoor installation in Ballyhaunis using animation and puppetry. Youthreach Kiltimagh has been awarded €6,323 to provide young people to work with two local artists to enable the group to create a performance piece based on samba drumming and costume making for the St Patrick’s Day parade, and Louisburgh Community Project has received €7,000 to interpret the life of Granuaille by creating an installation incorporating music, puppetry, movement and multi-media.  

Louisburgh mechanic wins top European award

Prize-winning motor mechanic Colm Corcoran, a native of Louisburgh, has won a much-coveted EuroSkills gold medal in a pan-European skills competition held recently in Rotterdam. Over 30 countries participated at this competition under international rules, which was co-sponsored by the EU Commission and the Dutch government and held in front of more than 40,000 spectators.
